In Year 2, we aim to provide a nurturing and faith-filled learning environment where our children can grow academically, spiritually, and morally. We are committed to guiding each child in their faith journey while fostering a love for learning and a care for each other.  We look forward to working closely with parents and carers in partnership to enhance each child’s learning.

Religious Education holds a central place in the Year 2 curriculum and the children in our care will deepen their understanding of Catholic teachings, stories from the Bible, and the life and teachings of Jesus. They will explore concepts such as love, forgiveness, kindness, and compassion. Together we  will engage in prayer, reflection, and participate in the celebrations that navigate the Churches Year. .

Reading is an important and crucial part of our learning and in Year 2 we will have the opportunity to read in school every day through our guided reading sessions. We encourage all our children to read at home each day and ask that our Home Reading Record is used to record and comment on reading completed at home.

In Year 2, we continue to work on our phonics skills, using them to develop greater fluency in our reading and to support our developing independent writing skills. We will also continue to read common exception words by sight. During our guided reading sessions, we will practise reading chorally and explore vocabulary, developing a deeper understanding of what we read. We will enjoy reading a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, learning about a range of topics and developing a love of reading

Mathematics

We continue on our Mastery Maths journey in Year 2 focusing on building a strong foundation in numerical operations, problem-solving, and thinking deeply about what we know and how we know it. Together, we will engage in learning that consolidates our understanding of numbers, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Our learning will include examples and problem-solving scenarios that encourage us to apply our mathematical knowledge.

Physical DevelopmentPE is taught on Mondays and Thursdays. We continue to ask that our children wear their PE kits into school on their PE days to minimise the need to bring extra bags into school.  As the weather turns colder, we ask that our children wear warmer clothing; school tracksuit bottoms and sweatshirt or tracksuit bottoms and a sweatshirt in our school royal blue.

Homework

Homework for Year 2 consists of daily reading, School Jam’s weekly Maths activities that support our work in class and a homework grid, where you will find 9 different home learning tasks. Please choose a task to complete every week with your child. You may wish to choose more than one task a week to complete.

Our Termly Overviews provide an outline of the key subjects and areas of focus, along with the incorporation of Catholic values and teachings, that your child will experience throughout the year. Year 2 is a special time as children continue to develop their academic skills while nurturing their faith and understanding of Catholic principles.

We look forward to working with all our families and thank them in advance for their continued support.
